|
|
Hi,
I'm looking for a way to write inside a SCSI device's structures, for example in its inquiry data, modifying the Product revision level.
Does it require specific hardware? Or is it possible to do this by flashing the firmware?
Thanks for your help. I've search a long time on internet , without success.

Hi & Thanks for the question.
Changing the devices Inquiry data is usually a function of its firmware and is specific to the company that makes the device. If the firmware needs to be updated, most companies will give you a "utility" (tool) and the newer version of firmware as a binary file. Then it is just a mater of running the utility and selecting the file to load on the device.
I hope this helps.

Hi Greg A,
When you say: "Changing the devices Inquiry data is usually a function of its firmware", does it mean that the Inquiry Data is part of the firmware, so that any firmware update rewrites the old Inquiry Data?
Or is it that the firmware got some function (code instructions) to modify it? If so, who is calling this code to execute it? the "utility" you talk about?
I suppose it's the first one, so the tool is just an uploader of raw datas which replace the old firmware. In this case, if I want to control what is in the Inquiry Data, I have to modify the binary file (the firmware), right?
Thank you for your help. as I said I've spent very long time on internet to find some answers, in vain. Even hardware specific forums doesn't help much.

Hi again.
Its all embedded in the firmware. That is, when you load the new version, the "revision" field of the inquiry data is updated, along with any other changes that were made to the code. There is no SCSI command (that I know of) that allows you to change just certain fields in the inquiry data.
I hope this helps.
